ABOUT SAMASAMA
-
The term SAMASAMA means all together in Tagalog. Bayanihan is a Filipino custom derived from the Tagalog word bayan, meaning community.
From the outside, AAPI communities are often perceived as devoid of meaningful difference in identity and experience. From the inside, our communities live vibrant, varied lives - but remain divided by a lack of exchange between our cultures and ongoing histories.
Our goal is to examine the multicultural American experience. Breaking through stereotypes and boundaries because diverse stories, perspectives, and contributions to push humanity forward.

*A GRACIOUS THANKS to our core team, Jamie Garcia, Michelle Chen, Mollie Q. 806-9189/ Samnang (703) 887-8802
Dear Friends from the DMV Area, please join me in welcoming our dearest Yorn Young and Neang Sou Siryka (from the Town Production) from Camodia at the concert on March 22 at the Harvest Moon Restaurant, Falls Church, Va from 7pm to midnight with our most well-known and long time favorite to many, the Hello Band!
Yorn is known in Cambodia as Keo Sarath #2, but most importantly he was the one who sang the role of Chao Chet in our Yike Kolab Pailin at the lst Cambodian Festival at the Silver Spring Pagoda! If you came to see that Yike show then you heard Yorn's voice. He also appeared live briefly at the Silver Spring Pagoda during the 2016 Cambodian Festival, so he has become a friend of many of us in the Khmer Community in the DMV area, and we are happy that he can come back to see us this year.
Neang Sou Siryka is a talented young Town Production artist. She is a grand-daughter of Neak Srey Keo Montha, our favorite singer with the Yothea Phirum Band in good old days!
See below for more info about the 2 artists.
Please contact via phone, Messenger or email for more info and tickets! Hope to see you all there on March 22! 🙏💖

Camobodian Dance-Drama: Buddha Overcomes All Obstacles
Smithsonian's Freer Sackler
November 10, 2018
Don’t miss this dramatic retelling of the Buddha’s determined search for enlightenment featuring classical Cambodian music, dance, and costumes. Long performed in the Khmer court tradition, this dance-drama has not been seen since the 1960s and is carefully re-staged here by Chum Ngek, a master musician who has reconstructed the drama from memories of pre-war Cambodia. The choreography and costume direction are by Devi Yim, a star dancer of the Royal Dance Troupe of Cambodia and dance director at Cambodian American Heritage. The play follows the historical Buddha as he encounters the world outside his family’s palace, renounces secular luxuries, and resists temptations from an army of demons.
Chum Ngek received the 2004 Bess Lomax Hawes National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, conferred upon one artist annually for career-long dedication to preserving, teaching, and performing valuable traditions. He is joined by an ensemble of performers from Cambodian American Heritage, a 38-year old Washington-area organization dedicated to preserving Khmer dance, music and culture, co-founded and under the artistic direction of Sam-Ouen Tes, former dancer in Cambodia's Royal Palace and a member of the Apsara ensembke, which received a 1998 National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
The performance is presented in conjunction with Encountering the Buddha: Art and Practice across Asia, and in partnership with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage and the Religion in America Initiative of the National Museum of American History, with support from the Lilly Endowment. This project also received Federal support from the Asian Pacific American Initiatives Pool, administered by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center.

Heartstrings by Artists from the Khmer Magic Music Bus
City Winery Washington DC
November 9, 2018
Presented by Cambodian Living Arts
During the years of the Khmer Rouge regime (1975-1979), Cambodia’s arts scene was almost destroyed. 90% of the country’s artists were killed, and 90% of musical instruments destroyed. In total, around 2 million Cambodians were killed or died as a direct result of the regime’s actions and policies.
In the 40 years since, the arts have experienced a profound revival - today the arts scene is vibrant, expanding every year. Arts remain a vital medium for healing, education, and reflection, and a catalyst for transformation, on a personal, community and national level.
Heartstrings explores the personal journeys of five musicians from Cambodia. Through a mix of storytelling and music, the artists share some intimate insights into their experiences over the past 20 years. What does it mean to conceal your passion and your livelihood, or to be forced to play propaganda music to survive? What does it mean to rewrite memories you thought you had? And what does it mean to be a daughter of one of the few surviving Master Artists? Witness the music that defined them, hear their stories, learn about the people who shaped them, and celebrate the power of the arts in building peace. Featuring renowned flute player, human rights activist, and founder of Cambodian Living Arts, Arn CHORN-POND, side Seyma THORN, Master Mann MEN, his daughter Mao MEN, and Savang TOCH.
Building on 20 years working in the field of arts for transformation in Cambodia, in November 2019 Cambodian Living Arts (CLA) will host the arts4peace Festival - a month of performances, screenings, discussions, workshops, and community events. The arts4peace festival will be a platform for artists to tell their own stories, and provide a space for transmission, dialogue, and reflection. Through the festival, artists and audiences can explore ideas about peace and conflict, histories and future, remembrance and reconciliation, and creativity and identities.
Heartstrings represents the launch of the arts4peace festival as part of the arts4peace tour to the US.
The performance will be followed by a live auction/fundraiser to raise funds for Cambodian Living Arts’ arts4peace Festival and to invite people to come and experience it for themselves.
All proceeds from this event directly contribute to the realization of Cambodian Living Arts mission to be a catalyst in a vibrant arts sector, inspiring new generations.

AAI Blessing Ceremony
June 4, 2017
One of the most important aspects of our culture includes respect and blessings (ការប្រសិទ្ធពរ) for parents and guardians. We had an exceptional amount of participants - more than we expected. We were so happy to see many of AAI members and good friends being so supportive. More importantly, there were more elder Cambodian ladies who came to help and support us this year. We had a lot of delicious food and desserts that were donated by members and friends. Everyone enjoyed the food, and of course there were a lot of left overs to take home. They inspired us to continue to serve and volunteer in our community.
We appreciate everyone's support especially to the families (Sophy, Vorn, Victoria, Chiv, Chhay, Seng, Sean, Lok Pou Ponlork and Samedy) with making food. Without their support ,we would not be able to continue to provide such excellent event. Thank you to our Board of Directors for organizing such a successful event. We hope to see you at the next one!
